从事美学、中国哲学和中国传统文化等研究,出版有学术专着二十余部,主要有《中国美学史》《当代美学原理》《中国古典美学史》《20世纪中国美学本体论问题》《心灵的冲突与和谐--伦理与审美》《狞厉之美--中国青铜艺术》《玄妙的太和之道--中国古代哲人的境界观》《占筮与哲理--周易蕴玄机》等。海外出版着作九部,其中多部译成英文,重要的有《Chinese Bronzes:Ferocious Beauty》《Confucius life of the great humanist》。国际上第一部介绍中国美学的论文集《Contemporary Chinese Aesthetics》(纽约,1995,)收入陈的论文两篇《Comparative concepts of Natural Beauty》《The Essence of Aesthetics》)。另在《中国社会科学》《文学评论》《美学》《新华文摘》《人民日报》《联合早报》(新加坡)等报刊发表论文数百篇。其创立的“境界本体论美学”誉为中国美学新的一派,其国内外影响正在扩大。《中国古典美学史》一书,邓晓芒教授认为“是国内迄今为止由个人独立撰写的最完整、份量最重的中国古典美学史着作。”中国人民大学将此书列为向海外招收美学专业博士生的参考书之一。《当代美学原理》整合中西美学构建了一个以“境界”为本体的美学体系,颜翔林教授评价为“极具理论的原创性与学术冲击力”。
