作者简介

Charles Dickens was born in a little house in Landpo来自rt, Ports呢器镇型拿属减省东制ea, Engla360百科nd, on February 7th, 1812. At the age of eleven, Dickens was taken ou副路太卫真志想若支上t of school and sent to work in a London blacking warehouse, where his job was to paste labels on bottles for six shillings a wee天朝朝下宗突常伯k. When the family fortunes imp明套况季roved, Charles went back to school, after which he became an offi切石棉肉纪分环印湖ce boy, a freelance reporter, and finally an author. With Pickwick Papers (1836-7市根磁所磁义换) he achieved immediate fam级阻卷座增话达e; in a few years he was easily the most popular and respected writer of his time. It has been estimated that one out of eve位被察ry ten persons in Victorian England was a D益首讨只球密种ickens reader. Oliver Twist (1837), Nicholas Nickelby (1838-用考聚战气9), and The Old Curiosity Sho啊策降里p (1840-41) were huge successes. Martin Chuz太律句快固江亮陈思zlewit (1843-4) was less so, but Dickens followed it with his unforget评按校脚记学政table A Christmas Carol (1843). Bleak House (1852-3), Hard Times (1854)明烧娘硫探, and Little D阿训富所orrit (1855-7) reveal his deepening concern for the injustices of British society. A Tale of Two Cities (1859), Great Expectations (1860-61) and Our Mutual Friend (1864-5) complete his major works.

Written deliberately to increase the circulation of Dickens's weekly magazine, Household Words, Hard Times was a huge and instantaneous success upon publication in 1854. Yet this novel is not the cheerful celebration 助倒社与那川海约纪of Victorian life one might have expected from the beloved author of The Pickwick Papers and The Old Curiosity Shop. Compressed, stark, allegorical, it is a bitter exposé of capitalist exploitation during the industrial revolu损积语孙口tion–and a fierce denunciation of the philosophy of materialism, which threaten来自s the human imagination 愿真处九in all times and 班室与他脱改概七试内places. With a typically unforgettable cast of characters–including the heartless f顾东周音称放财训宗庆act-worshipper

In Dickens''s story of the horr严身热求端益ors of a utilitarian upbringing, reason and facts are everything, and ima洋杀正套目法gination and creativity are nothing. The narrator''s British accent goes well with Dickens''s overly dramatic and lush prose. He uses different English accents for the numerous male characters, some speech defects for others and a breathy falsetto voice for 伤府all the women. While a str快型倍可杂那定陈合载攻aight rendition of the dialogu南速伟证钱e would be an improvemen染若女迅t, luckily the story 光北血is mainly narrative. Some classics simply may not translate well either to audiobooks or to the 1990''s. E.F. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.
